We are nearly finished with the yearly carao production in sunny Costa Rica. This was a poor year in terms of production. In addition, we saw that large numbers of producing carao trees are being cut for firewood. This is disturbing, and we are taking action to give value to the trees by ensuring that landholders are well paid for their trees' production. We did this this year by making carao purchasing agreements directly with the landowners, rather than though a middleman.
Most of this year's carao was picked by our own carao picking crew. (Yes, I was leader of the crew!)
I (Lloyd) am in the process of migrating the website to a new "community" website model. It will have many advantages over the present static website. The idea is to offer new material frequently - a highlight will be a blog (editorial) by me! - and visitors will be able to comment on the articles and ask questions directly on the site. I expect to answer most inquiries this way, rather than through personal emails - we'll see how that works! The website will use the popular open source Drupal content management system. (http://www.drupal.org) When the new website is inaugurated, this newsletter will probably become obsolete.
Recently one of our customers brought to my attention that the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) will (again!) soon take action to try to take away citizens' rights to obtain alternative, nutritional therapies.
I quote Rima E. Laibow, MD, Medical Director of the Natural Solutions Foundation:
"On April 30, 2007 the FDA will close the public comment period on a 'Guidance' which will classify every alternative practice as medicine so that only licensed physicians can carry out the procedure AND vitamins, minerals, herbs, etc., will suddenly become 'untested drugs' which will be forbidden. ...but public outcry can stop this assault on your health and your freedom."
[Update: FDA extended the comment period to May 29, 2007]
