I've received a lot of mail about Carao's allegedly bad flavor, and to tell the truth it is a pretty controversial matter!
Here in Costa Rica carao is famous for its bad smell, but equally famous as delicious when taken with milk. Very few Costa Ricans think that carao tastes bad in milk.
So that makes me wonder: Did all you folks who complained about Carao's bad taste try it with milk? When taken in milk the general recommendation is to take about 3 teaspoons per cup of milk, cold or warm. It tastes very much like chocolate milk that way. I like it even stronger than that: 3 teaspoons carao to half a cup of milk.
So, if carao tastes so good in milk, why don't I recommend that everyone take it that way? Well, here in Costa Rica everyone thinks that some anti-anemic action is lost due to milk interfering with iron absorption. This might not be true, since carao is not a concentrated source of iron. Moreover, the animal studies in Nicaragua and Honduras did not report any difference in effectiveness against anemia in calves when taken with milk or with water.
So to sum up: to fight anemia it might be best to take carao alone or slightly diluted in water. But if you really don't like it that way, try it in milk the way the Costa Ricans take it. You will probably love it that way, and you will probably still get the expected anti-anemia action. It you don't, please write and let me know.
Another point: This year we believe we were able to improve the flavor of carao considerably, while maintaining a 100% natural, raw product containing 100% carao essence.
